The decision that made me a better leader

Anyone who has been leading teams for a few years will likely have realised something: the higher you go, the fewer honest mirrors you have. People look to you for clarity, steadiness, direction — and you give it. But it means you don’t always get the space to think out loud, test ideas or explore what’s really going on beneath the surface.

And it can feel vulnerable to ask for input for yourself. You’re supposed to have it all figured out, right?

When I was in a senior leadership role, I felt that too. I wanted to be at the top of my game. I understood how much leadership shapes a team, a culture, a business. I wanted to lead well, not just competently.

And that’s what led to one of the most important decisions I made in my career: I called in an expert.

Not because anything was wrong. Not because I was struggling. But because I wanted to lead with more intention, not just more effort. I wanted fresh input. I wanted to see what I wasn’t seeing.

I started working with a coach.

What struck me wasn’t how complicated it was — but how clear it felt.

She didn’t give me answers. She didn’t tell me what to do. She didn’t hand me a leadership playbook.

She listened. She noticed the language I used. She spotted patterns I hadn’t clocked. She asked questions that cut through the noise.

It wasn’t therapy.
It wasn’t mentoring.
It wasn’t advice.

It was a space where I could think — properly — without the pressure of being “the leader” in the room.

And that shifted things.

It sharpened my thinking.
It helped me understand what was driving my decisions.
It helped me set better boundaries.
It helped me be clearer on my priorities.
It helped me lead with more steadiness and less noise.

So what did she actually do? She created the conditions for better thinking. She gave me space to be honest. She gave me room to test ideas, explore possibilities and see myself more clearly.

In my own coaching practice, I see the same thing with my clients. They’re able to:

  • Step into bigger roles with confidence

  • Navigate complex team dynamics with more ease

  • Make decisions they’d been circling for months

  • Lead conversations they’d been avoiding

  • Build cultures they’re proud of

  • Understand what drives them — and why certain behaviours show up under pressure

Not because they became different people. But because they made a deliberate choice to get the right support.

Leaders carry a lot — expectations, decisions, people, culture. And, oftentimes, alone. When you have someone in your corner who understands your world and helps you think clearly, everything becomes more intentional and less reactive.

That’s the value of calling in an expert coach. Not to fix you. Not to advise you. But to give you the clarity and perspective you can’t get on your own.

You’re allowed to have that. You’re allowed to make leadership easier. You’re allowed to choose support that strengthens you.
