If your life was a business, would it have a strategy?
When someone asks, “How are you?”, there’s a phrase I hear all the time: “Good… but busy.”
I hear it from clients, colleagues, leaders and confession time, I say it too.
But here’s the thing I keep coming back to: If you were running a business, “busy” wouldn’t be enough. A business needs a strategy. A direction. A sense of what it’s building toward.
It needs clarity on questions like:
What are we trying to grow?
What are we trying to improve?
What matters most right now?
What’s the plan for the next few months?
And once you have that strategy, you use it to make decisions. You ask: Does this thing align with the plan, or not?
If it doesn’t, you don’t do it. Not because you’re lazy or uncommitted, but because it doesn’t serve the direction you’ve chosen. And here’s the part we rarely admit:
We should be doing the same with our lives.
But most of us aren’t.
We’re busy — genuinely busy — but we’re not always busy with the things that matter to us. Sometimes we’re busy with habits, obligations, noise, expectations, or momentum. Sometimes we’re busy because we haven’t stopped long enough to ask: What am I actually trying to build in my life right now? Which leads to the real work
Step 1: Get clear.
What do you want to develop, strengthen, grow, or shift in the months ahead? Not a five‑year plan. Not a life overhaul. Just clarity on the direction you want to move.
Step 2: Use that clarity to make decisions.
Does this thing — this commitment, this task, this opportunity, this habit — line up with where you want to go? If yes, great. If not, it’s noise. This is how businesses stay focused. And it’s how people do too.
Here’s a small reflection for the week: If your life was a business, what would your strategy be?
And what’s one thing you could stop doing — or start doing — to align with it? Because “good… but busy” isn’t wrong. It’s just not a strategy.
